Abstract

This article explores how the rapid adoption of GLP‑1 therapies is reshaping the role of food supplements, shifting the focus from long-term weight loss outcomes to supporting everyday user needs. It examines how altered eating patterns—smaller portions, reduced frequency, and inconsistent intake—create new nutritional and experiential gaps throughout the day. The article aims to highlight emerging consumer behaviors, the growing demand for targeted “companion” solutions, and how brands are responding with modular product strategies designed to improve adherence, mitigate side effects, and support overall wellbeing alongside GLP‑1 use.

Introduction 

The rapid rise of GLP‑1 therapies is redefining the weight management landscape, reopening the conversation around how consumers approach weight loss and how nutrition can support it. While current usage of weight loss drugs remains relatively low, with 22% of US consumers using weight loss drugs to manage their weight (1), interest is high and expected to grow as pharmaceutical innovation advances and new formats enter the market. This shift is already influencing how the supplements category positions itself. Rather than focusing solely on weight loss, products are increasingly aligned with broader functional needs shaped by GLP‑1 use, such as satiety, metabolic and gut health, digestive support, and lean mass preservation (1).

Shifting consumer needs in the GLP-1 era

GLP‑1 therapies are not only transforming clinical approaches to weight management but also reshaping how nutrition is experienced in everyday life. Usage has accelerated significantly in recent years following earlier approvals, supported by improved access through telehealth and compounding channels, and further innovation in drug delivery and formats (2). At the same time, consumer perception is increasingly favorable, with 31% of global consumers expressing a positive view of anti-obesity medications such as GLP‑1s (2). Together, these factors reinforce that GLP‑1 therapies are not a short-term trend, but a structural shift that will continue to influence health and nutrition behaviors.


By influencing appetite regulation, gastric emptying, and blood glucose control, GLP‑1 therapies change how and how much consumers eat across the day (1). This is reflected in reduced overall consumption and a shift towards smaller, more controlled portions, driving demand for nutrient-dense products and portion-optimized formats (3).


As intake declines, the structure of daily nutrition begins to change. Lower and less consistent food consumption increases the risk of insufficient nutrient intake, particularly protein and key micronutrients, while also increasing the relevance of metabolic balance and digestive comfort. Over time, reduced caloric and protein intake also elevates the importance of lean mass preservation, as muscle loss becomes a critical concern during GLP‑1-driven weight reduction (1).


This creates multiple intervention points across the day. Nutritional needs are no longer addressed only within fixed meals, but emerge across different moments: supporting protein intake, fibre and gut health, hydration, micronutrient sufficiency, and overall tolerance to reduced food intake (2). In practice, this is where the role of supplementation begins to expand—from supporting weight management outcomes to helping consumers manage the day-to-day realities of GLP‑1 use.


The shift is already translating into measurable changes in consumer behavior. Recent retail data indicates that GLP‑1 users are significantly increasing their spend on supplements and vitamins, with growth of over 60% in some markets (4). At the same time, interest in supportive solutions is high, with up to 83% of GLP‑1 users expressing strong interest in products designed to address their specific needs (5). Together, these signals reinforce that supplementation is not emerging as an optional add-on, but as an expected part of the GLP‑1 user journey.

How consumers are approaching weight management and GLP1

Consumer behavior in weight management is becoming more polarized and more intentional in the GLP‑1 era. A clinically driven segment continues to rely on medically supervised use, focused on long-term health outcomes. In parallel, a fast-growing lifestyle segment is adopting GLP‑1 therapies as part of a broader self-optimization approach, where weight loss, appearance, and everyday performance play a significant role (1, 2).


This is redefining expectations. Weight management is no longer seen as a short-term intervention, but as an ongoing system that requires active management. Consumers are taking a more hands-on approach to how they support their bodies alongside GLP1 use, particularly as reduced intake changes what nutrition needs to deliver.


Rather than focusing purely on calories, consumers are prioritizing what remains: sufficient protein, fibre, and micronutrient intake, alongside hydration, metabolic balance, and gut health (2, 6, 7). This marks a clear transition from passive weight loss to active nutritional management. Consumers are not just losing weight; they are increasingly looking to preserve muscle, maintain function, and feel well throughout the process. This is where supplementation begins to move from optional to strategic, supporting consistency and performance within a GLP‑1-driven routine.

Product strategies: from single products to companion systems

GLP‑1 therapies are also changing how weight management solutions are designed. Traditional approaches built around single “hero” products are becoming less relevant in a context where nutritional needs are more specific, functional, and continuous.


In response, the industry is shifting towards more targeted, function-driven solutions. Core areas such as protein, fibre, metabolic health, and digestive support are becoming central to innovation, reflecting both the physiological effects of GLP‑1 therapies and evolving consumer priorities (1, 6, 7). This is particularly evident in metabolic positioning. The share of supplements positioned for weight management or diabetes increased by 11,4% between 2024 and 2025, while blood glucose management has become a dominant claim, rising from 63,1% of launches in 2021 to 75,6% in 2025 (8).


This evolution is driving the emergence of more structured product systems. Rather than relying on one product to deliver all benefits, brands are building modular solutions designed to support specific moments, such as satiety, energy, digestive comfort, or recovery. These “companion systems” reflect how GLP‑1 users experience nutrition: as a series of functional needs distributed throughout the day.


Formulation strategies are becoming more precise in parallel. Protein is increasingly positioned around muscle preservation and metabolic health, while fibre and prebiotic systems are leveraged for both gut health and glycaemic control (1). Broader retail trends confirm the same direction. Growing interest in blood glucose control, hydration, electrolytes, and micronutrient support highlights a shift towards maintaining energy, recovery, and physiological balance, not just reducing weight (9).


Format trends further reinforce the move towards practicality and adherence. Capsules and tablets remain dominant, increasing from 37,4% of launches with blood glucose claims in 2021 to 48,9% in 2025, reflecting demand for simple, low-friction solutions. Powders continue to play a key role due to their flexibility and ability to deliver higher nutrient loads. In contrast, gummies declined from 14,5% to 7,7%, indicating a shift away from lifestyle-oriented formats towards more functional, outcome-driven delivery systems (8).


Positioning is evolving in parallel. While early-stage innovation has explored GLP‑1-mimicking claims, this approach carries clear regulatory and credibility risks (1). As a result, brands are moving towards defined, evidence-based roles, such as supporting satiety, managing glucose response, improving digestive comfort, and preserving lean mass. This aligns with broader industry direction towards function-first, credible positioning in a category increasingly shaped by pharmaceutical influence (7).


Overall, the category is transitioning from isolated products to integrated systems. Supplements are no longer designed as standalone weight loss solutions, but as part of a broader framework that supports the full GLP‑1 experience—helping users maintain nutrient intake, manage side effects, and sustain long-term outcomes through targeted, science-backed support.

Current market offer: structure, mechanisms, and emerging solutions

The current market offer for GLP‑1 companion products is increasingly organised around specific physiological needs rather than broad weight management claims. Current examples address digestive issues, nutrient gaps, dehydration, muscle loss, skin elasticity, and blood sugar changes, reflecting a shift from “weight loss support” towards products designed to help users manage the practical consequences of reduced intake and altered digestion.


Digestive support is one of the clearest areas of development. GLP-1 companion products in this space typically include fibres and prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, digestive enzymes, ginger, and vitamin B6. There is also growing interest in branded ingredients with evidence generated directly in GLP-1 user populations, moving the category beyond general digestive health positioning. An example of this is combination of chicken egg powder and bovine colostrum, which is positioned around gastrointestinal support. The published review on chicken egg powder, bovine colostrum, and combination therapy supports the rationale for these ingredients in gastrointestinal disorders (10).


Another major segment focuses on nutrient adequacy. As GLP‑1 use may reduce appetite and food intake, multivitamin and mineral products are positioned to help fill nutrient gaps linked to low-calorie diets. Hydration and nutrient density are also becoming more visible. Muscle preservation is another central mechanism. Products targeting this need typically rely on protein, amino acids, creatine, or related ingredients to support lean mass during reduced intake. Multi-ingredient formats already exist, combining ingredients positioned around nausea, constipation, fatigue, muscle loss, skin elasticity, and hair loss.


Overall, the market is moving away from single-purpose weight loss products towards defined companion solutions. The focus is not on mimicking GLP‑1 drugs, but on supporting the nutritional and physiological gaps that may emerge during use: digestion, nutrient intake, hydration, glucose management, and lean mass preservation.

GLP‑1 therapies are not just reshaping weight management outcomes; they are redefining how nutrition is used within the process. As eating patterns become less structured and physiological demands more complex, supplementation is evolving from a supportive role to a more strategic function.

Instead, the focus expands towards maintaining nutrient intake, managing side effects, preserving lean mass, and supporting daily functionality. This fundamentally changes how supplements are positioned and developed.


The current market reflects this transition. Products are increasingly designed around specific physiological needs, supported by consumer demand, product innovation, and growing clinical relevance. Rather than competing with GLP‑1 therapies, supplements are being integrated alongside them—filling nutritional gaps and enabling more sustainable use.


Going forward, the opportunity lies in precision. Solutions that align closely with real user needs, are supported by credible science, and are delivered in practical formats will define the next phase of innovation in this space.
